We had a Ball and we hope you did too…!
Yes folks just under a month ago we held one of our hugely popular fundraising balls at the Olympus Fish & Chip Restaurant in Bolton. To say that we had a Ball is an understatement. With your support and some some amazing raffle and auction prizes, along with the marvelous venue, it’s very hospitable owner, Tasos and his great waiting on staff that were expertly lead up by Danielle Huges, we managed to raise a figure just of over £1000!!! for the Fire Fighters Charity and MacMillan Nursers.

We had a full and very interactive group of guests, all getting into the swing of the the theme of the evening, getting dressed to the nines, gangster stylie. With the ladies embracing the roaring 20’s gangsters mol look and and the gentlemen embracing their inner Mob Boss.
Each of the guests were greeted with a welcome glass of champagne. We were so very pleased with not just the amount of people who attended and dressed for the part, but for the amount that they were willing to spend , donating, bidding or paying to play on the special Great Balls Of Fire Quiz!
The night was captured perfectly and very skillfully in 100’s photos by professional wedding and event photographer, Ania Pankiewicz, who donated her time and expertise to give us some fun, delightful and special photos to remember the night through.
A Classy Venue
The Olympus saved the day as they were not our initial choice as the venue. They stepped in when we were badly let down at the very last moment by another venue on the outskirts of Bolton, who ended up double-booking out their function suite. We have to stress that had we known about the Olympus beforehand they would have been our first choice without a doubt!
As we have already mentioned, Stasos (the owner) and his team at Bolton’s premier and award winning fish & chip restaurant pulled out all the stops. Nothing was too much trouble. The Olympus is a large, spacious and beautifully decorated venue, which with it’s retro styled look, fitted the theme of the perfectly. It was quite simply ideal and the perfect place to hold our ball. We should say following the success of our ball, The Olympus is now available to be booked in the evenings for other private parties such as dinner dances, birthday parties and weddings. It truly is a lovely spacious venue and seat over 120 people comfortably with the large orangery acting as a large dance floor area.
Our MC & Toastmaster
Acting as our super smooth and eloquent compere, MC and Toastmaster was Mr Derek Timmins-Jones, making sure that everyone was guided swiftly to their respective fully themed table and knew exactly what would be happening and when. More than just a Toastmaster, Derek is a spokes person, maître d’ and guide, the glue that can hold any function or event together and ensure that it runs smoothly.
MacMillan Nurses with Derek Timms-Jones
Before dinner was severed, Derek delivered a brief and moving description of why one of the charities that we support (MacMillan Nurses) needs the funding it needs. Outlining how it got started and when and why through Carol it was one of our chosen causes.
The Fire Fighters Charity with Dave Bradley
Dave Bradley then followed Derek stating the cause on behalf of the Fire Fighters Charity. Again explaining what it is they do and what help and services they provide in the way of support for serving and ex fire fighters and their families. Also explaining why through Emma Hughes and her father who died on duty as a serving fire fighter, that this was the first adopted charity that Great Balls Of Fire was initially set up to support.
The Fish & Chip Meal
Once the two charity introductions had been done, this was the cue for the meal. Stasos, Danielle and all the staff quickly and efficiently set to work serving the generous portions of fish and chips complete with a full selection of sauces and dips to garnish and flavor what was an already scrumptious meal.
The Hot Spot Quiz….a Quiz? …yes a Quiz!
After the main course was served we were treated to DJ & Quiz Master Dave Bradley’s Hot Spot Quiz, which is a brand new form of quiz that is more like a TV Game Show rather than your usual pub style quiz.
After Dave dished out a few tablets and hooked up some of the guests with the necessary APP on their own mobile phone we got underway and did the first 2 rounds of questions. It really has to be seen to be believed, understood and appreciated just how good and how much fun it is. Our eventual winners we “Peaky Blinders” who won the barrel of beer, delivered to their house, which was kindly donated by Bank Top Brewery.

During the course of the night we held a silent auction and half way through we drew the winners on a what seamed like a never ending raffle. We just had so many raffle prizes to draw and hand out…phew!

For now we’d like to say a collective thanks to all the companies and services that donated all the amazing raffle and silent auction prizes, all of which we will thank individually through our social media posts.
After the auction results and completion of the draw we moved onto the dance floor, quite literally as DJ Dave Bradley pumped up the volume and kicked out some banging tunes for us all to party the rest of the night away to.
Finally we’d like to thank all our marvelous guests for being there and especially those who posted their on photographic memories of the night on social media using the #TAG – #GBOF2016
